I’m not a concert person. If you counted up all the concerts I’ve attended over my lifetime, I’m pretty sure it would average out to less than one per year. I can only recall twice having ever travelled to another city to see a show. In grad school, I drove to San Jose for a Coheed and Cambria concert with David, and in college, I went to Louisville to see Bob Dylan with my dad.
That’s not to say I don’t like music. I’m just more of a passive consumer than an active one (e.g., listening to what’s recommended by friends or Spotify versus downloading albums and going to concerts).
When it comes to plants, though, I’m definitely a groupie. It would take me awhile to come up with a ranking of my top five musical artists, but flowers no problem. Off the top of my head: daffodil, zinnia, iris, camellia, rose.
What would your rankings be?
Daffodils lead my list because they are one of the earliest bloomers of the season so it’s easy to be excited when they show up. Also, there are many different varieties, which is fun to explore.
One of my favorite parts of living in the South was seeing daffodils bloom in January. I’m missing that this year living in the Northeast where daffodils are just starting to emerge from the ground (including in my yard!).
2022 was an epic daffodil season for me because I lived in Atlanta and did a lot of traveling north during the spring. My earliest daffodil pictures are from January at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta.
I visited Cincinnati in April and saw a lot of beautiful daffodils at Spring Grove Cemetery.
Then, I traveled to Montreal in late May where I saw even more daffodils, rounding out my five month tour.
Last week, I saw my first daffodils of the year during a trip to Washington DC, at least six weeks later than I would have spotted them if I was still in Atlanta.
I won’t have as long a daffodil season this year, but I’m a Daffhead, so I’ll take what I can get.
Until Next Time
Another daff pic, this one from my 2023 season, which was also epic because I visited Gibbs Garden in Georgia, which has the nation’s largest daffodil display. This photo was taken in early March.
