I recently have become interested in reading biographies of American presidents. More about this will be coming in a future post. My dad is good about grabbing books that relate to my interests when he is at thrift stores. He recently found one titled The First Ladies. It was published in 1979 and includes portraits and short biographies of first ladies from Martha Washington to Rosalynn Carter.
I opened it, interested to see what information it held, but found I was more entertained by the hilarious captions that a previous owner of the book had written next to the portraits of the First Ladies. Here I will share a few of them that I found to be the funniest.
Elizabeth Kortright Monroe
“Check out those spin curls”

Julia Gardiner Tyler
“Looks like she might be single”

Jane Means Appleton Pierce
“Wonder why she doesn’t put more clothes on”
Anna Tuthill Symmes Harrison
“Believe she must have been dressed for Halloween”

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy
And speaking of Halloween…
“Jackie could have done better than this”
The portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy brings to mind the recent portrait created of King Charles III where his face emerges in what looks like a sea of red. My first thought when I saw it was, “what were they thinking?”
Would you give any of these portraits a different caption?
I wish we also had a book of portraits of presidents that this person captioned so we could compare.
