Today is Memorial Day in the United States, the holiday where we honor men and women who’ve died in service to the country. Last year, I wrote about how to find your local war memorial, and this year, I wanted to share pictures from one of mine.
The War Memorial on Amherst College’s campus is perched on a hill and offers views of the Holyoke Range. It honors the men from Amherst College who perished in World War I and World War II. I frequently visit the site on my walks because gazing out on the mountains reminds me of the vast possibilities this world offers. Since I moved here two years ago, I’ve been trying to capture photos of the memorial from the same angle during different seasons. This Instagram reel, featuring the music of Major Glenn Miller, who died in World War II, showcases the results of this effort:
One thing I love about this memorial is that it offers space for the living to not only reflect upon death but to engage with life. Whether it’s the spring flowers, students studying on the nearby Adirondack chairs, or tour groups walking up from the Admissions Office amazed at the view, this site has so much life to it.

Awww, great pictures!! Especially with Gus and Maggie!
