An interesting question about this that I now wonder is was this a fever dream on Elisabeth’s part or did she truly have this interaction? I am leaning toward that she did because I saw at least a couple accounts saying Mrs. Astor was in a nervous condition after the sinking. Thanks to everyone who followed this series, i am already thinking about what Titanic subject I could write about next year, maybe authors on the Titanic?

Enjoyed this series a lot. Do you think women and children would still be the first ones to board rescue boats if this happened today?

Well of course with today's regulations due to Titanic there would be enough lifeboats. If not I don't necessarily know that it would be pushed as much but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of men still would have this mentality and I also could imagine a lot more women demanding to stay with their family. Interesting question for sure.

Charlotte no matter how many times I read of women being forced into boats by their husbands …it just tears at my heart.

I think I would have to be knocked out before acquiescing to separation.

My heart goes out to Elizabeth in every way.

The only way I would have boarded a lifeboat willingly is if I had children with me.

I think the encounter with Mrs Astor would have happened because there was no class separation among the survivors.

Everyone would have had access to each other.

I have read more than one account that mentions Astor and other women being locked into rooms on board the Carpathian.

I am sure the Captain feared that women suffering extreme hysteria would elect to jump overboard out of sheer despair.

That Mrs Astor was pregnant at the time of the Titanic’s sinking and carried that child to term in the aftermath is pretty amazing in and of itself I think.

Your well researched articles are always worth waiting for!!! 😊

Kat, I completely agree! My sister said how would it play out today if there were to be a situation like this? I think some men would still feel compelled to be chivalrous and I also think many more women would assert themselves in their decision to stay with their family. And that is so true for Mrs. Astor being pregnant, and she was not in a good condition from the very beginning of the Titanic journey! They really should have allowed her husband to board the lifeboat. There was room! I think it's sad that one side of the ship said women and children only while the other let men get in once the women and children boarded instead of just letting empty seats be wasted. Thanks so much for reading! More to come for sure.

Ps on a sad note, the dog with the Astors in that picture also went down with the ship. :(
