An excellent essay that shows how our perspectives change over time. No daffodils in Scotland yet, but some snowdrops are peeking through.

Your mention of snowdrops reminds me of the poem "The Crocuses" by Frances Ellen Watkins. It includes the phrase "the silent sod" that inspired my Substack:

While the snow-drops still were sleeping

Beneath the silent sod;

They felt their new life pulsing

Within the dark, cold clod.
