What's shared about Hannah in the interview in the Cincinnati Commerce suggests she was a "loyal slave" and Jackson a "good master." The more contemporary article by Cheathem that you cited indicates that she emancipated herself from the Jackson family during the Civil War.
As always, I'm glad to be learning about the lives of those involved with the president as well as the president himself in this Presidential Picks series.
Thanks to those who read along about Old Hickory. I definitely hope to read more about Hannah’s life in that book I mentioned. What a crazy but interesting time of our country. Now onto Van Buren who is one of the presidents who stayed at the restaurant Golden Lamb here in Ohio, I might just have to make a trip ;).
Thank you so much! I really enjoy this so far. I got this idea from reading some reviews on a group on Facebook called Serious Nonfiction Books. It made me realize how little I know about these figures and I am really finding it very interesting to delve into their stories. Many more to come and I hope you continue to enjoy!
Thank you! Same here. I do not understand why our society is so dismissive of this history. The founding fathers themselves were pretty acknowledging of the reality of the times even if they did not find ways to break away from it themselves due to the financial implications. I will have many more stories to share, I am just getting started with this reading challenge :)!
I completely agree! It really is astonishing how a person can go from completely degrading a population of people to claiming they will all be united in heaven. Why make hell for them on earth? Somehow reminds me of a huge portion of our present day population. The hypocrisy is real and does not die! I sure will, I truly am looking forward to that one that this lady wrote about him and Hannah, whatever seemed to happen between these two. It will be very interesting! Thanks so much! :)
You and I are sitting in the same pew all the way, Charlotte!
I wonder for whose benefit those who are dying spew out the bs like Jackson did.
I guess being on the precipice of eternity may change one but how can they not understand it’s a little too late.
Knowing Jackson he was still egotistically military commander-ing it strategy wise in his brain.
What a pile of rot he was through and through.
I am horrid but I have no empathy for him whatsoever.
I can’t imagine how any woman ever touched him with less than a ten foot pole… him and his constantly erupting never healed battle and duel wounds… he was just gross of mind, body, and spirit.
Yeah he reminds me of someone else who currently functions much the same except this one has no old battle wounds.
Absolutely! That is the craziest part of it all, you can actually give Jackson the credit of at least having military service in contrast to our faux populist president of today. And you are right, that is about all you can give credit for lol!!!
Hannah Jackson's story reminds me of Bill Yopp, an enslaved man who was an aide to a Confederate soldier and who I wrote about last year: https://thesilentsod.substack.com/p/the-legacy-of-bill-yopp

What a wonderful project you’ve set yourself upon - thanks for sharing it with us.
And great job of finding that newspaper clipping - it adds so much to the big picture of Jackson and the times in which he lived - and died.

Again fantastic idea! Will you be sharing links to all the books at some point?
That is a great idea! I will do that soon along with my developing TBR! Thanks for thinking of it :).
Great entry Charlotte. Important detailed history we never learned in school - but need to.

I totally enjoyed the conclusion of this saga, Charlotte!
It left me still knowing how completely bereft of ethics and moral integrity he was.
I can’t imagine any woman touching him with a ten foot pole but that’s my opinion.
I am also interested in your TBR list and would love for you to slap up up on notes someday soon. lol
